Graph and Citation

This graph shows the child deaths per day due to child abuse and neglect in the years of 1995-2007. Every two or three years the number increased. As you can see, the number was the highest in 2007, so it has of course increased more since then.

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis and Citation # 4

"I remember the feeling I experienced when I saw him put his fist to her face and watched the blood pour out of her nose and lips - my beautiful sister. How would she live with such fear and unhappiness? How would she face school, friends, life? I knew the meaninglessness of life - I wanted to die in the act of torturing and killing him. I split in two and lost myself entirely. The next thing I remember was staring up at an enormous booted leg which led from my neck to his head and the ceiling beyond. I heard him say, 'You will NOT call that number. They will carry you out in a body bag.'- One Survivor's Story

Reading this quote I felt very sad. How would you feel if this happened to someone close to you such as your sister or brother? I know that this survivor must have felt very angry if he said that he wanted to die while it was happening. He felt sorry for his sister and wanted to know how she would deal with life and everyday things.

This article is an anonymous story of a survivor. This survivor explains how he saw his stepbrothers and he never thought that a man would beat a girl. He had taught himself not to react when ever he saw his 2nd and 4th grade brothers getting beaten and choked by his stepfather. Whenever he saw his sister getting beat he was an entirely different person and all he could remember was a booted leg on his neck and his stepfather threatening him.

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis and Citation # 3

" This is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time for all of us to become more aware of the tragedy involving too many children in our communities and, indeed, through the country and the world. What a shame that it takes special events and displays to remind us that children are hurting and in grave danger. Too often, we realize that only when a child is severely injured or killed. In fact, 70 percent of all assault victims are children, and only one child in every 10 victims of abuse will tell someone about his or her hurt. That simply is unacceptable." -  Eagle, The (Bryan, TX)

With April being child abuse prevention month, it is a time for people to become aware of this awful thing that has been going on for a while everywhere. It is ridiculous that we have to have events to make us remember that children are getting abused and are in great danger. We only seem to notice when it is too late.

In Bryan,Texas, they have 800 pinwheels for their annual Pinwheel Garden in which the pinwheels represent a victim of neglect or child abuse. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and it is an awareness month. We take a month out of the year and try to show this awful thing that has been occurring and try to prevent and reduce child abuse. A lot of the times when we notice child abuse the case has gotten really severe and that child may need to be removed from the home in order to protect them or maybe that child is already dead. It is not likely that a child may speak out about being abused because they may be scared of what will happen if they tell and it is not good if the child feels like they can't talk to anybody about their situation. As people, we don't want to get in the problem because we are maybe scared. Any type of authority or professional have to report by law if they have suspicions of a type of child abuse, but a regular person can report it anonymously. The way that the town of Bryan,Texas remembered this issue is a good reminder but wouldn't it be great if this wasn't needed to be done?

This is a picture of hands covering the eyes and mouth of someone. This picture is saying that the silence needs to be broken and we need to speak more about child abuse and the victims need to speak more about it.

Quote, Summary,Source Analysis and Citation # 2

"Preventing child abuse and neglect in our community requires attention and focus at each level of prevention. Counseling, Family Support and Education Services are the three levels of prevention at CAPA. Each supports our mission to prevent and treat all forms of child abuse by creating changes in individuals, families and society that strengthen relationships and promote healing." -CAPA

This quote was pulled from the website of an organization that wants to prevent and reduce child abuse.CAPA is Child Abuse Prevention Association.CAPA started as a crisis and information hot line in 1975 and new mothers had the opportunity to attend a parenting class in order to prevent child abuse. CAPA became a national organization in 1978. In the 80's they formed a day treatment program for abused children in connection with another organization called the Children's Place. During the 90's child sexual abuse treatment distended. CAPA has grown and expanded since then and they focus mainly on treating and preventing all types of child abuse by providing services on education, family support, and counseling. When I worked on child abuse as a topic before I heard of this organization before so I thought that I might research it. This quote relates to my topic because it is an organization that is trying to stop this issue and has been trying to prevent this problem for a long time.

This picture is showing rib fractures in an infant that was secondary to child abuse. This means that they were being abused also, but they were not as important as the other abused child. This is again another physical effect of child abuse. This photo shows that physical child abuse can lead to broken or fractured bones.

"Rib fractures in an infant secondary to child abuse" National Institute of Health.  06 Sept. 1999. 28 March 2011.< http://mashpedia.com/child_abuse>.

Quote, Summary,Source Analysis and Citation # 1

"Children who are physically abused are likely to receive bone fractures, particularly rib fractures, and may have a higher risk of developing cancer. Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as juveniles, 28% more likely to be arrested as adults, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime." -Physical Effects

This quote is very useful and resourceful because it describes the physical effects of child abuse and how they could be affected later in their life. Being a juvenile or being arrested as an adult could be an effect of this and also they are likely to commit crimes. Abuse of all kinds can have big effects on that child. Something as little as yelling at them everyday or telling them that they aren't useful can make them do the same to their child and it can start a cycle. If it does start a cycle it can get worse and worse every generation and eventually even lead to physical abuse.

This picture is showing a little boy who is hiding behind something. There is hope and fear in his eyes. This is what it is like for abused children. They don't want to get abused. They just want a normal childhood.

Preliminary Links

http://mashpedia.com/child_abuse
This website was very helpful to me. It is a very good source because it really analyzes the different types of abuse so that you can understand what it is. It uses research because it uses statistics about the American National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse and the percentages and rate of how many men and women were abused in a certain time period.

This website is very resourceful because it is about a 30 year follow-up of the effects of child abuse and neglect on obesity in adulthood. I think  that  this is a great observation about the effects of child abuse. The authors of this article are Tyrone Bentley and Cathy S. Widom.

This article is from the newspaper USA Today discussing what  the Michigan Republican Scott Brown went through as a child. This article is from February of 2011. He has been abused by two stepfathers and had two sexual predators as a child. I think that website is really resourceful because it's about an article from a newspaper.
http://www.childhelp.org/pages/immediate-effects-of-child-abuse
I found this website to be one of the most  resourceful. It tells of the immediate effects of child abuse and the specific immediate effects of each type of child abuse. It also gives statistics of long range effects of child abuse.

What I Want To Know About My Topic

I want to know why parents abuse their children and how does it affect their lives in the future. I want to get a better understanding of what type of abuse affects the child the most. I want to understand how the abused children deal with this. I want to know what in their past makes them abuse children. I want to know how does child abuse affect the abuser. I want to know do they enjoy abusing their child and why they enjoy it. I want to know how does child protective social workers choose what homes the abused children go to. I want to understand why would a parent want o hurt their child.

What I Already Know About My Topic

Before I chose this topic I already knew a few things about it. I know that children get abused everyday and sometimes the parents are never caught. The children might feel that if they tell someone they will get abused even more. The government needs to help more with the cases of child abuse. Sometimes when the children get moved to another home the guardians may also be abusive. I think that it occurs everywhere. This is a problem that needs to be dealt with. Child abuse can lead to mental problems, a life of crime, and even death. When parents are not caught abusing their child, they feel as if what they are doing is the right thing and that they can keep doing it. There needs to be a stop to this issue.

Story Behind My Topic

Everyday many children get mentally, emotionally, and physically abused. Sometimes those children go back to the parents; if the parent is convicted of abuse they sometimes try to have more children or maybe even adopt children. That is not fair to the children and the government needs to do something about it. Of course there is always a chance that they might not abuse them, but there is also always a chance that they might go back and do the same thing they have been doing. When they abuse those children they are scarring them for life. The parents or guardians that do this to these children should not be given a second chance and should never be able to adopt children or have children of their own.
